The UN has warned that the albino community in Malawi faces extinction if they continue to be hunted down and murdered for their body parts for use in witchcraft.
Albinos are targeted due to traditional beliefs that their body parts can be used in special money rituals to increase wealth or win the lottery or make one’s business prosperous.
People with albinism suffer from a lack of pigment or sun protection. Albinos in Africa especially are witchunted for their rarity and dehumanized routinely. Their plight is the subject of the documentary: “Fear & Loathing: Albino Africans Survival in Tanzania”.
