Writing is not an easily profitable career. For those who have decided to professionally pursue the path, making a living from writing can be near difficult to achieve, except of course you are fortunate to skip into the few making good money off it.
It is not every writer that will become a bestselling author and have so many books in circulation with royalties that will set them up for life.
And even before a writer gets to the bestselling author status, a lot of time, work, sleepless nights and starving days would have been invested.
Writing is hard work, and so time consuming that in between making a living and doing the writing, there is not much time for much else.
This is why initiatives like the A. A. Writers Fund is the best thing since sliced bread, for writers hoping to make a living from writing.
The Akighir and Akinbukola Writers Fund (A. A. Writers Fund) is an organisation set up by writers who understand “the struggle”.
It is privately funded, and was set up with the aim of “funding one writer at a time, literally”.
The fund provides a one-off grant to one writer per quarter of the year, to provide a bit of financial relief and assistance to writers who are finding it difficult to meet their daily needs while pursuing their passion.
To qualify, applicant:
– Must be a Nigerian who resides in Nigeria
– Can be a writer in any genre: Literary, News, Speech writing, Opinion Pieces etc.
– Must be a freelance or takes on freelance work as well
– Should have a proven track record of work
To apply, writers are to send their names and location, personal statement detailing why they should benefit from the fund and what they need the grant for (300 – 500 words, preferably with specifics), two samples of their best work with each sample between 500 – 1500 words; all in a single MS Word document, to email@example.com
The grant is disbursed quarterly with a minimum amount of £100. The deadline for this quarter’s applications is 30th October, and the grant, which currently stands at £160, will be awarded in November.
