Established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000, World Intellectual Property Day is an event observed annually on 26 April.

It is observed all around the world to raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life and to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe.

April 26 was chosen as the date for World Intellectual Property Day because it coincides with the date on which the Convention establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization entered into force in 1970.

This year, WIPO reports that it’s theme is exploring the future of culture in the digital age: “how we create it, how we access it, how we finance it. We will look into how a balanced and flexible intellectual property system helps ensure that those working in the creative sector and artists themselves are properly paid for their work, so they can keep creating.”
