France, host of the Euro 2016 championship lost to Portugal in the final of the tournament on Sunday.

Having stringed together impressive performances in the tournament, even in the final match against Portugal, France would be disappointed not to have been crowned the champions of Europe on the night.

France dominated Portugal but ended up losing to Portugal by a lone goal.

The winning goal came in the 109th minute from striker, Eder, who plays his club football in France. Eder actually replaced 18-year-old Renato Sanchez in the 79th minute of the game.

Reacting to the result of the match, former Real Madrid full back, Alvaro Arbeloa pointed out that France lost because of their refusal to select his former Real Madrid teammate, Karim Benzema for the tournament.

Marca, an online sports journal, quoted Arbeloa to have said: “That’s what you get for not calling up Benzema”.

Benzema’s alleged blackmail of international teammate Mathieu Valbuena was the reason he was dropped by French manager Didier Deschamps.

Arbeloa played through last season as a Madrid player and left the Santiago Bernabeu at the end of the season. He is currently seeking another club.

This statement might not do him much good with French teams who may be interested in his signature.
