Ever since Instagram and YouTube beauty bloggers have become celebrities in their own rights, weird and wacky beauty hacks have suddenly become a thing.
The latest beauty hack involves water bottles as skin firming devices. Yes, really.
Makeup artist @mercedesbenssz recently took to her Instagram page to show how she uses water bottles to give her firmer and clearer skin.
In the video, which has been viewed over 2,000 times, Mercedes took two water bottles, squeezed them and moved them around her face in order to tighten and cleanse.
Her accompanying caption read: “How to tighten your skin and have clear skin. Drink up (water) pour up (water). Squeezing empty water bottles and moving upward motion to keeping blood flow circulating to tone and firm the skin.”
Texan dermatologist, Ted Lain told Allure magazine that was Mercedes using the suction of the bottles to perform a lymphatic massage. But is this really a cost-effective skin-firming solution?
Ted says no: “The lymph system is the body’s secondary waste system, and excess lymphatic fluid accumulation can cause swelling, especially of the cheeks and lower eyelids.
“’Firming’ implies increasing the production of collagen and elastin in the dermis, the second layer of skin.
“Unfortunately, massage or suction has not been shown to facilitate this.”
Alternatively, Ted recommeneded sticking to skin care products that contained retinol which can help firm skin.
Meanwhile, this water bottle hack feels reminiscent of the beauty blogger who used dental floss as an effective method to get rid of blackheads.
While it all may be in the name of beauty, be kind to yourself (and your skin) while you’re at it.
