Miss Winifred Uduimho, winner of the 2016/2017 Nigeria Beauty Pageant has called for concerted efforts in tackling domestic violence against women.
Uduimho made the call on Saturday in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo.
She decried the rate of violence against women and the girl child and urged government to intensify efforts at combating the menace.
“Domestic violence against women is a national epidemic and affront to humanity.
“Government, NGOs and the private sector need to partner to end all forms of violence against women and young girls,’’ she said.
Uduimho stressed the need for comprehensive steps to eradicate domestic violence and other forms of gender-based violence, stressing that increased awareness would reduce the menace.
She also said that the media needed to do more by bringing the issue to the front burner of public discourse so that communities could rise and ensure that the perpetrators were brought to book.
The beauty queen also called for support for her pet project on widow empowerment.
Winifred Uduimho emerged the 7th Nigeria queen after she came top in a pageant competition on June 25.
She hails from Okpekpe in North Ibie, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo and a graduate of Computer Science of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo.
