On October 20th, Californian political activist and billionaire, Tom Steyer, filed a petition to impeach the U.S. president, Donald Trump. His campaign was backed by an advert that quickly went viral. The advert which was shown in all 50 states reportedly cost over ten million dollars.
Steyer’s effort did not go without results. By the end of October, his petition had acquired over a million signatures.
On the reason for his passionate activism against Trump, Steyer explained that the president was “an immediate danger to the health and safety of America”.
Steyer, who is a Democrat mega-donor, has launched another advert in his campaign calling for Trump’s impeachment. Unlike the first, the second ad focuses on the tax-reform legislation. In the ad, Steyer condemns the Republican plan for taxes and brands it a means to cut taxes for corporations and the wealthy.
“They won’t tell you that their so-called tax-reform plan is really for the wealthy and big corporations while hurting the middle class,” Steyer says in the ad.
He also notes that, “It turned out that the system that had benefited people like me, who are well off, was in fact stacked against everyone else. It’s why I left my investment firm and resolved to use my savings for the public good”.
So far, twenty million dollars has been spent by Steyer on his “Need To Impeach” campaign; a campaign which has received over two million signatures and counting.
