Following Monday’s attacks on the Ukpabi Nimbo community of Enugu state which has led to threats of reprisal attacks against the Fulani Herdsmen accused of killing dozens of civilians in the unprovoked attack. President Buhari has assured Nigerians of his continued dedication and commitment to ensure the safety of lives and property of all in the country.

According to a press release signed by the President’s SSA on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President “unreservedly condemns the attack on Ukpabi Nimbo and other such acts of extreme violence against communities in other states of the Federation.”

He further instructed the Inspector-General of Police, the General Officer Commanding the 82nd Division of the Nigerian Army and the Director of the Department of State Security in Enugu State to personally oversee investigations in the community and ensure the culprits are brought to justice.

The Governor of Enugu state, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, met with President Buhari late last night for briefing on the attack and to discuss additional measures to forestall similar attacks and restore public confidence. Speaking with a reporter from the NTA, Ugwuanyi dispelled the rumours that had made rounds online that he was unable to reach the President concerning the situation.

“My attention has been drawn to an online publication that I called Mr. President and he kept me for some hours, it’s not true. At no point did I call Mr. President or anybody in the Presidency for that matter. There was no need. But I’m very happy that Mr. President has directed the CDS and IGP to fish out the culprits and then of course safeguard lives and properties. That is the demand of the state. That is what I’m supposed to do as governor”, Ugwuanyi said.

Governor Ugwuanyi had ordered a two day fasting following the attacks on the Ukpabi Nimbo community of Enugu State.

MASSOB had recently issued a 30-day ultimatum to President Buhari to take action against the herdsmen or the group would take the matter of protecting their territories into their hands.
