Despite Marseille accepting a bid from south London side Crystal Palace for 22 year old Belgium striker, Michy Batshuayi, Chelsea seem to have hijacked the deal and have already reached an agreement with the young forward.
Crystal Palace saw their £31.6m offer accepted on Monday and must have hoped to complete the transfer within the week.
It now appears that hope is all but dashed after Marseille accepted Chelsea’s £33.2million bid for the Belgian Tuesday night. The west London side entered the race with no prior serious interest to table a bid.
British media reports that Batshuayi prefers Chelsea to his other suitors, Palace and Tottenham, and has already agreed personal terms with the EPL giants ahead of a medical once he is granted special dispensation to leave the Belgium squad.
Chelsea is understood to be ready to offer the young striker a five year contract.
If Chelsea is successful with this deal, Batshuayi will become the first signing of Antonio Conte’s era.
Batshuayi will join Diego Costa, Loic Remy and Bertrand Traore in Chelsea’s striking line up once the deal is completed.
It would be recalled that Chelsea legend and one of the club’s greatest striker, Didier Drogba was signed from Marseille in 2004.
Hopefully Batshuayi can do for Chelsea what Drogba did.
