Chelsea is looking to spite former manager, Jose Mourinho, following Manchester United’s stunt in the deal to land Romelu Lukaku from Everton, as they open talks with Inter Milan for Nemanja Matic.
The ex-Chelsea boss who is now with Manchester United is looking to sign the Serbian defensive midfielder this summer, but their signing of Lukaku looks to be putting that in jeopardy.
The United chief wants a new holding player and is targeting Matic along with Tottenham’s Eric Dier and Radja Nainggolan of Roma.
Chelsea are set to complete their £40m swoop for Monaco star Tiemoue Bakayoko.
The French powerhouse’s arrival at Stamford Bridge will all but end Matic’s time in west London and United are looking to take advantage.
But the London Evening Standard report that Chelsea are not willing to sell him to their title rivals.
It is said that Antonio Conte’s side are now holding negotiations with Italian giants Inter over a £34.5m deal.
Matic has been training on his own at Chelsea since the beginning of the club’s pre-season schedule.
Inter fly to China for their pre-season tour next week and Matic could be part of their squad by then.
That would be a blow to United’s transfer plans.
Tottenham are highly reluctant to sell Dier while Roma are also playing hardball over Nainggolan.
Mourinho has told United bigwig, Ed Woodward, to get a deal done for one of the three stars.
But the potential transfers will all be difficult to get over the line and United may be forced to look elsewhere in the remaining weeks of the window.
