On Tuesday one of the kidnapped Chibok girls, Amina Ali Nkeki was found in Sambisa forest by the Nigerian army. After two years of being kidnapped from her school in Chibok by Boko Haram, Amina has been rescued. Of the over 200 students that were captured, she is the first to be rescued.
They were captured in April 2014 by Boko Haram gunmen who arrived in Chibok at night, raided the school dormitories and loaded over 250 girls on their truck. Within hours of the kidnap, more than 50 of these girls escaped by jumping off the trucks that were conveying them.
Subsequent to their abduction, a worldwide campaign ensued. The campaign is popularly known as the #BringBackOurGirls campaign. It was supported by so many world leaders and activists including US First Lady, Michelle Obama and Pakistani activist, Malala Yousafzai.
Details of Amina’s rescue:
– She was found by an army-backed vigilante group in Sambisa forest.
– A four month old baby was found with her.
– According to the army, she was rescued with a man called Mohammed Hayata who claims to be her husband. They believe he is a suspected Boko Haram terrorist.
– She is 19 years old.
– She is from Mbalala which is 6 miles from Chibok.
Amina was flown to Abuja to meet with President Buhari who was very delighted about the rescued. He however said “but my feelings are tinged with deep sadness at the horrors the young girl has had to go through at such an early stage in her life”
Her return has drawn a lot of sympathy as well as joy in the hearts of many Nigerians and non Nigerians who have been campaigning, praying and so much more for the return of these girls. The world is also urging President Buhari to do more so that the other girls may be returned as soon as possible.
Also for those who thought that the Chibok girls abduction was a scam, as former First Lady, Patience Jonathan and the governor of Ekiti Ayo Fayose, they can now see that they were wrong.
