Former Newcastle and Chelsea striker, Demba Ba, 31, who now plays in the Chinese league with Shanghai Shenhua suffered a horrific injury 0on Sunday that could leave him out of action for eight months.
The injury left him with a broken bone on his left leg in a Shanghai derby (Shanghai Shenhua vs Shanghai SIPG FC).
Demba who is already a star in the Chinese league has so far scored 14 goals in 18 appearances this season to help his team to sit comfortably at 5th position, two points behind fourth placed, Hebbei CFFC.
Though the Senegalese striker’s team went on to come back from a goal down and win the match by 2 – 1, they will rue the loss of the man who has scored more than half of their 29 goals this season.
Reacting to the injury, Goal.com quoted Shanghai Shenhua boss Gregorio Manzano, as saying: “It (the injury) could end Ba’s professional career.
“I would rather lose the game than lose Ba. God is unfair. Ba is too good to have this happen to him.”
He hinted, however, that Demba would receive “the best medical treatment” available.
Wu Xiaohui, Chairman of Shanghai Shenhua Football Club couldn’t hold back tears when he described the extent of the horror of the injury to the media.
Taken straight to the hospital after he was stretchered off in the 70th minute, Demba has now been ruled out for at least eight months.
Shanghai SIPG FC defender, Sun Xiang who made the tackle that resulted in the injury has already visited Demba at the hospital. Shanghai’s vice-mayor Zhao Wen has also visited him.
His former teammates at Chelsea have already started sending their best wishes to the injured striker.
Eden Hazard tweeted: “courage mon gars sur@dembabafoot”
Gary Cahill also tweeted: “to my brother from another mother @dembabafoot
Chelsea FC also wished the man who scored 14 goals in 51 appearances for them well in a tweet: “all at Chelsea FC send our best wishes to former striker @dembabafoot. Get well soon Demba.”
