Blogs and news sites have been abuzz recently on rumours that the Kenyan Government has finally released Barack Obama’s birth certificate, stating that Obama was born a year before his father moved to the US and thus, Obama is not a legal US citizen. But is this really true?

A quick look through the blogs carrying this headline shows no real evidence for the claims except for the citing of the source of the news as being from the popular site, World News Daily Report.

The problem, however is that World News Daily Report has a disclaimer page where it states:

WNDR assumes however all responsibility for the satirical nature of its articles and for the fictional nature of their content. All characters appearing in the articles in this website – even those based on real people – are entirely fictional and any resemblance between them and any persons, living, dead, or undead is purely a miracle.

In future, before believing a story just because it is on the Internet, it’s important to take a step back and ask: Where is the evidence for these claims? Is it really true? And if it is true, would other bigger news companies not have carried the headlines too by now?
