All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Edo state, Godwin Obaseki, and his supporters escaped death yesterday when armed men reportedly opened fire on them at Sobe, Owan West Local Council Area of Edo State while on a campaign.
This attack is coming a week after Edo State Deputy Governor, Pius Odubu’s convoy was attacked on its way to a campaign at Auchi, Etsako West Local Government.
It was gathered from sources that the incident happened at about 5.30pm. Some youths in the area pursued and arrested the suspected attackers and handed them over to the police.
Mcdonald Obasuke, Edo state Commissioner for Arts and Culture, also confirmed the incident saying he saw the man who went into a vehicle and brought out a gun which he used to shoot at the spot where Obaseki was about addressing the APC delegates. He said “while we were still expecting delegates, Obaseki was already inside with the party leaders when this boy who pretended he was with us went inside the car and brought out a gun and fired at our direction.
“We were lucky to dodge the bullet so we immediately mobilised our boys and pursued them because it seems they came to disrupt the event. We caught them and handed them over to the police. It was really shocking but we thank God nobody was hurt.”
Obaseki expressed utter shock, saying he canceled the campaign due to the incident; “I called off the meeting with the delegates because I had to be whisked off by my security men. No one was hurt though. I cannot be intimidated, whoever did this has failed because we will continue our campaign”
