The shortlist for the 2016 Etisalat Prize for Literature has just been announced.

Out of the earlier released longlist of nine books from the African continent announced during the opening ceremony of the 2016 Ake Arts and Book Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun state, a shortlist of three books has been released.

The shortlisted books are;

  • The Seed Thief by Jacqui L’ange (South Africa)
    (Publisher – Umuzi Publishers, South Africa)
  • And After Many Days by Jowhor Ile (Nigeria)
    (Publisher – Kachifo Limited, Nigeria)
  • Mr. and Mrs. Doctor by Julie Iromuanya (Nigeria)
    (Publisher – Coffee House Press, USA)

The authors were shortlisted by a three-member panel of judges comprising of Nigerian novelist, Helon Habila (Chair), South African writer/activist, Elinor Sisulu and Ivorian writer and Africa39 laureate, Edwige Renee Dro.

Speaking on the judges’ decision of the shortlisted books, the Chairman of the judges’ panel, Helon Habila noted that, “in addition to originality of voice and literary excellence, our purpose was to also select a work that portrays an ‘African sensibility'”.

The winner of the 2016 Etisalat Prize for Literature will be unveiled at the Grand Finale in Lagos, together with the first three winners of the Flash Fiction competition which is an online-based competition for non-published African writers of short stories, and it is scheduled to take place in March 2017.

The winner will receive a cash prize of 15,000 euro, an engraved Montblanc pen, an Etisalat-sponsored book tour and fellowship at the University of East Anglia to be mentored by Professor Giles Foden, author of The Last King of Scotland.

The prize, which is in its fourth year, has seen past winners from Zimbabwe, South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo,  with two Nigerian writers out of the three on the shortlist this year, there is a high possibility that the Western region of Africa might clinch the title this year.
