Facebook is keen to erase any trace of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and has put rules in place that are so stringent that innocent bystanders have been caught in the crossfire while trying to gain access to their Facebook accounts.
With Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook finally deciding to play a part in the worldwide fight against terrorism, a woman with her Facebook account named Isis Thomas fell victim as her account was blocked.
Isis Thomas is the woman’s real name and she’s 27 years old. She lives in Bristol and she was named by her mother, Sian after the ancient Egyptian goddess, worshipped as the ideal mother and wife, and the patron of nature and magic.
The $7.2 billion valued ISIS Pharmaceuticals said it was considering re-branding due to the name now having “so many negative connotations”.
In the U.S., a bookstore was also repeatedly vandalised because it was being called ‘ISIS Books & Gifts’, even though it had been open for 35 years.
Facebook is determined to ensure its platform is not used to promote ISIS in any way.
What do you think? These are hard times for individuals and institutions nicknamed ISIS like the dreaded terrorist group.
Personally I used to be happy being called Donald, until the recent developments in the U.S. presidential race, concerning the image of Donald Trump, the Republican Party’s presidential hopeful.
Sometimes a change of name might be the most reasonable thing to do.
