After the news of the death of football legend and former Super Eagles coach broke early Wednesday morning, tributes poured in, in honour of the sports icon who changed the face of Nigerian football.
Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari paid tribute to Keshi via a series of tweets on his official Twitter account,
“Nigeria today lost a great sportsman, football player, coach and citizen. #RIPKeshi”, the first tweet read.
“President Buhari commiserates with the family of the late Stephen Keshi, and with the entire country, on his untimely passing #RIPKeshi”
“Nigerian football will not be the same without Stephen Keshi. He gave this country his all. May his soul rest in peace.”
Spokesman for the family, Emmanuel Ado confirmed the news of Keshi’s death with a statement that said Coach Keshi, who had planned to travel to the United States on Wednesday suffered a cardiac arrest.
The family had also said on Wednesday that Keshi had been in mourning following the loss of his wife of 35 years, Kate, on the December 9, 2015.
Keshi’s death has left his four children orphans. He died at the age of 54.
