Seventy-six-years-old former Wimbledon champion, Bob Hewitt has lost his appeal in South Africa to reduce his six-year sentence for raping underage girls.
His lawyer had argued that the sentence should be reduced on account of Hewitt’s old age and poor health.
In rejecting this argument, Judge Mandisa Maya (one of the three Supreme Court of Appeal judges presiding) said that the 6 year sentence was already given in consideration of these factors and a life sentence could have been imposed for the rape of a minor.
In April, Australian-born Hewitt was expelled from the International Tennis Hall of Fame because of his conviction.
