This August, the Food and Drugs Authority of Ghana plans to ban the importation of cosmetic products containing hydroquinone, a skin bleaching chemical into the country.
Hydroquinone is by far the most popular ingredient in skin bleaching products, but it is also very harmful. It is a known carcinogenic, proven to cause skin cancer.
The ban comes in light of the public health issues associated with the use of hydroquinone and the proliferation of cheap skin bleaching products marketed to low income earners who may not know of its harmful effects.
Products with hydroquinone have already been banned in the US, Europe and Japan.
