Google which uses the open source platform Java in its Android Operating System, OS was recently sued by Oracle, owners of the copyright for Java.
The case is of copyright infringement.
On Thursday, a Federal Court ruled in favour of Google, stating that the company’s use of 37 of Java’s API is protected by ‘fair use’.
This isn’t a mere win for google, it’s a win for everyone who uses the OS and the apps on it. If this judgment had gone the other way, app developers who depend on the ability to freely use API’s, would have been hamstrung by an assortment of legal roadblocks.
It would still have been a bigger loss for Google especially though; afterall, 9 billion is a really large sum to pay to pay for anyone, company or institution.
