Going trophy-less in all competitions in the 2015/16 season, notwithstanding, France and Atletico Madrid star, Antoine Griezmann, believes he should win the UEFA’s “Best Player in Europe” award ahead of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.
Speaking to “24sata” ahead of the award, Griezmann said: “I am proud to be a finalist; that means I am on the right track and have to continue that way.
“I don’t want to sound arrogant, but I deserve this award because I’ve had a great season with both club and the national team.
“It has been an unforgettable season, first in the Champions League with Atleti, then Euros with France.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t win a trophy and it was a blow for us, as well for our fans.”
UEFA’s Best Player in Europe will be selected on Thursday, based on players’ performances over the course of the previous season – the 2015/2016 season.
While Griezmann didn’t finish last season with any trophy for both club and country, he had a season he could be proud of.
He led Atletico Madrid to the final of the Champions League with an excellent return of seven goals in 13 games.
He followed his impressive form with Atletico Madrid with an even more special showing for France at the Euro 2016 Championship where he won the golden boot with six goals in seven appearances.
His performance was not enough to help France lift the trophy though, as they lost to Ronaldo’s Portugal in the final.
It will be interesting to see whether or not Griezmann deserves the award as he claims considering he’s coming up against stars like Ronaldo, Bale, Messi, Suarez, and Neymar, who not only had a fantastic 2015/2016 season but capped the season with trophies.
