In the most recent African Union International Conference in the capital of Ethiopia, Haiti shocked the world by announcing that it would be seeking full membership of the AU. If it becomes a member, Haiti will be the first member of the AU to not be physically present on the continent of Africa.
“…The African continent occupies a place increasingly important in the diplomatic action of the Haitian government … to this end, a process of participation of Haiti in the African Union was engaged with the President of the regional institution, for the grant to Haiti, of a status of associate member and of the accreditation of a diplomatic mission with that organization,” Haitian Prime Minister, Dr. Garry Conille said.
Even though this is the first outsider request to join the AU, Haiti has strong ties with the continent. It is known as the world’s first free Black Republic from 1804 and many Haitians of today are descendants of African slaves.
