Quietly sleeping in his tent at the Crocodile Bridge Camp, Kruger National Park, South Africa, 15-year-old Erco “Boela” Janse van Rensburg woke up to find a hyena’s jaw locked to his face.

The hyena dragged him by the collar of his pajamas top before sitting on him, local media reports.

The boy’s grandfather, Basie Smalberger, told the press that Erco described the harrowing sound like “chips breaking in a packet.”

According to local news website Netwerk24, the hyena locked its jaws onto the boy’s face, breaking facial bones and dragging him out of the tent in his pajamas.

South Africa’s wildlife agency (SANParks) said the boy was rushed to hospital in Nelspruit after the attack where he received medical treatment.

SANParks spokesperson William Mabasa said the animal was likely looking for food when it found the boy sleeping in a separate tent from his parent’s.
