A court in Delhi, India has found 5 men guilty of raping a 51 years old Danish woman, a crime committed on January 14, 2014.
The Danish woman was raped by 9 men, 3 of whom were minors who had to be tried in a juvenile court. One of the other 6 has died since the crime was committed in 2014.
The woman who was a tourist was robbed and raped at Knife point on her way back to her hotel. She was attacked when she asked for directions to her hotel from the men.
Immediately after receiving treatment and giving her statement, the Danish woman left the country.
Rape is the 4th most common crime against women in India. The number of rape cases in India has been on the rise over the last 10 years.
However, after the 2012 gang rape bus case in Delhi, legal response to rape cases improved, with the Indian government implementing a fast-track court system to rapidly prosecute rape cases.
Despite the improvement in legal response, rape is increasingly being perpetuated in India. According to statistics, the conviction rate has fallen in the last 40 years.
