A lecturer in the department of Crop Production, College of Agriculture, Kwara state University, KWASU, Dr Solomon Osunlola, has committed suicide after he was demoted from a full time lecturer to a contract staff.
Sources close to the university told journalists in Ilorin yesterday that the travails of the deceased started recently following the verification exercise carried out by the management of the institution.
At the end of the exercise, it was discovered that the deceased had retired at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Kwara state office before he took appointment with the university in the year 2010.
It was learnt that after the management of the university wrote a letter to him and informed him of his demotion, the deceased was said to have started behaving in a very strange and abnormal manner, showing that he was psychologically disturbed.
It was also discovered that one of his friends who was said to be greatly disturbed by his strange attitude offered to assist him with a job at Landmark University, Omu-Aran.
But unfortunately the deceased could not submit his credentials to his friend before he committed suicide.
Another source claimed that after the conversion of his full appointment to a contract staff, another friend of his, took him to a cleric who was said to have counselled him, and afterwards his friend followed him to his family who were residing in Ibadan, Oyo state capital.
Having expected that the deceased ought to have come out of his room yesterday morning, his family members were said to have forced his room door open only to discover that he has committed suicide.
Contacted, Director, Public Relations, KWASU, Dr. Isiaka Aliagan confirmed Osunlola’s death.
According to him, “The Management of KWASU, Malete, would like to clarify that the late Dr. Oluremi Solomon Osunlola, was a Lecturer 1 in the Department of Crop Production, College of Agriculture and joined the services of the Institution on a full-time appointment in 2010.
“However, during staff verification, it was discovered that the late Osunlola had already retired from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture,Kwara Office, before taking up a full-time appointment with KWASU.
“Despite the fact that the deceased violated the rule of his engagement, the University, in August, 2017, converted his appointment to Contract, on compassionate grounds. This is all we can say about the death.”
