A 42-year-old woman, Rashidat Salisu, was arraigned at a Surulere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Monday on allegation of stealing two babies.

The defendant also faced a charge of child trafficking.

Police prosecutor, Sergeant Anthonia Osayande, told the court that Rashidat committed the offence on May 16, at Oko-Oba, Agege, area of Lagos when she stole an eight-month-old baby and a one-year-old one from their homes.

Osayande alleged that the defendant had been in the business of stealing children but that nemesis had finally caught up with her.

Rashidat pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mr Ekpaye Nwachukwu, granted her bail in the sum of N500, 000, with two sureties in like sum.

He said that the sureties must provide evidence of tax clearance and ownership of property in Lagos.

Nwachukwu also ordered that the sureties should deposit N100, 000 each at the court’s Registry and adjourned hearing to Aug. 16.
