Nigerian female singer, Lami Philips on Wednesday 25 May launched her Gift of Literacy campaign, an initiative with the aim of ensuring every child can read.

The campaign which takes the form of school book tours, mentoring and spelling bees made its first stop at Jamal-tul Islamiyahh Primary School, Igbo Efon Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria.

On her website, she explained the background and need for such campaign in Nigeria: “There are over 15 million children who do not have access to the books they need to become capable readers and achievers.

“This is the sad reality for children who are growing up in poverty; books are scarce. In some of the lowest-income communities around the country there is only one book available for every 50 children.”

“The initiative provides a resource essential to overcoming illiteracy, one that is missing for children from poor backgrounds; access to an ongoing and diverse supply of high-quality books.

“We are determined to ensure that every child in need do not miss out. We are taking big steps to see that the children we serve have access to rich content in all its forms.”

Other celebrities on the campaign are Kate Henshaw, Omawumi, Sound Sultan, Chigul, Debola Lagos, amongst others.

In the pictures shared on Lami’s instagram page, everyone involved in the campaign were seen donating books and engaging the children in discussions.

The children all looked happy as can be seen in the pictures below:

The needs of these schools are basic. They need books, uniforms, exercise books.. And mostly support. I was amazed that one teacher could control over 50 children at a time and make them learn. It's not easy. These kids come from backgrounds where school is made to seem like an obstacle. Some of them may have lost hope that they can become someone great. I saw the most beautiful faces today. I wanted to take them with me and snap my fingers to fix their challenges but I couldn't. I made #bestie come along. I need her to understand see the real world.. To appreciate what she has. Thank you @osayia @foofieg for your contributions . Thank you @guardiannigeria @tokeibru for your support. Thank you @blankhutmedia for covering. Thank you @360nobs for ALWAYS supporting Lami! Please please I'm begging send your donations to Sound of Eureka 0016348432 Stanbic IBTC We need to help them build their library. We need someone to take up sowing their uniforms. They need school bags. We need volunteers to visit these kids most importantly. At least once a month. Just visit them and read to them. They need and deserve love to. Let's not make this a publicity stunt. Let's make it count. I need help. I can't do it alone. Everyone has something to give. This matters to me a lot. I will not stop #untilevertchildcanread #GiftofLiteracyCampaignwithLamiPhillips
