Brazil legend Romario has suggested that he was a better player than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo due to the amount of goals that he scored.
Barcelona star Messi and Real Madrid attacker Ronaldo are widely seen as two of the greatest players of all time, but Romario, who states that he scored 1,003 goals in his career, feels that he was better than both of them.
Romario told Globoesporte: “In goals I’ll outlast both of them, more than double, it’s true they have different characteristics than I had.
“Today they are the best in the world, like Neymar. They have achieved many titles, but leaving the modesty aside, I can say that even if they have achieved Golden Balls, in the area I was still better.”
Romario feels that Messi and Ronaldo will find it difficult to reach the 1,000 goals milestone given that they are both entering the latter stages of their careers – they are aged 30 and 32 respectively.
He said: “They are over 30 years, it will be very difficult.”
Messi has scored 606 goals for club and country, while Ronaldo’s tally stands at 612.
Romario enjoyed an impressive career that saw him take in spells at PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona and Valencia amongst others.
While official records show that the striker scored 734 goals, his personal count is over 1,000 as he includes goals scored in friendlies and youth matches.
