It is true that people around the world suffer from one mental illness or the other. Another truth is that though Nigeria is not exempted, sufferers in Nigeria do not acknowledge it.

News broke yesterday of a man who had climbed an electric pole and threatened to jump down if he wasn’t given N5million.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) who arrived at the scene nine hours after the incident have released an official statement about what happened.

Here’s their official statement:

That a man identified as Frederick Gino, a foreigner from Cameroon climbed an electric pole in an attempt to commit suicide, at Adebisi Ogunniyi Crescent, Lekki Phase 1. Reports from eye witnesses stated that he had been on the pole since 5:30 a.m. All efforts by the community to bring him down proved abortive. However, the Agency’s officials in collaboration with the Fire service were able to rescue the suicide victim.

In an attempt to rescue him he sustained injuries and was immediately taken to Oba Yekini Eleguishi Health Centre, Lekki Phase 1.

The LASEMA General Manager, Mr. Michael Akindele, said that security operatives will conduct proper investigation into the matter. He advised people to be vigilant of strange faces and other activities around them, as well as reporting such incident to security operatives or call the toll free line 767 or 112 for necessary assistance.

These are the facts of the incident in a set of tweets by eye witnesses:
