Media outlet Don Balon has reported that Argentine superstar, Lionel Messi, still desperately wants to win trophies.
Ideally, he wants Barca to continue as a serious force in La Liga.
He’d also welcome Ernesto Valverde’s men competing in a Catalan league – although appreciates such a division would lack competitiveness.
With that in mind, it’s suggested Messi is keen for Barca to compete in the Premier League if they’re not allowed to remain in La Liga.
The 30-year-old reportedly fancies locking horns with the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal.
Barcelona is the largest city in Catalonia.
And, after a disputed referendum over the weekend, the wealthy area could make a bid for independence from Spain.
Don Balon reckon that might spell the end of their time in Spain’s top tier.
La Liga has a huge commercial draw and Barca’s stars could see their commercial interests affected if they weren’t allowed to join another league.
Messi, Luis Suarez, Ousmane Dembele or Marc-Andre ter Stegen all have lucrative business interests off the pitch.
Barca played their top tier clash with Las Palmas behind closed doors on Sunday.
Controversy surrounding the referendum meant supporters weren’t allowed into the historic stadium. Valverde’s men still cruised to a 3 – 0 victory, though.
A second-half Messi brace and Sergio Busquets goal ensured Barcelona maintained their impressive start to the season.
