Minister of Information a nd National Orientation, Lai Mohammed has threatened to sue the Independent Newspaper over a story it published on November 15 titled: “Change begins with me. Campaign gulps N3.4 billion’’.

The minister also threatened to sue Messrs Akin Fadeyi/Omo Bazuaye over the same issue.

His lawyers, Femi Falana Chambers, in separate letters written to the respondents intimated the parties with the ministers grouse.

The letter dispatched to Independent Newspaper on Sunday and signed by Oludare Falana, representing the chambers read:

“We are counsel to Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the Honourable Minister of Information and Culture of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on whose behalf and instruction we write this letter.

Our attention has been drawn to your highly libelous statement published and circulated in Vol 14, Number 208 of 15th November 2016, edition of your newspaper with the screaming headline: “Change begins with me. Campaign gulps N3.4 billion’’. You also claimed in the aforesaid publication albeit falsely that the “Change Begins with ME’’ launched by President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, 8th September, 2016, was stolen by our client.

Having damaged our client’s hard earned reputation by your reckless action, we have his instruction to demand a retraction of your libelous publication within 7 days of the receipt of this letter.

Take notice that if you fail or refuse to accede to our client’s demands we have instruction to sue you with a view to restoring his reputation which your reckless publication has damaged.

The other letter, also signed by Oludare Falana and dispatched to Messrs Akin FAdeyi/Omo Bazuaye read: “We are counsel to Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the Honourable Minister of Information and Culture of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on whose behalf and instruction we write this letter.

Our attention has been drawn to your highly libellous statement published and circulated in some online media where you claimed, albeit falsely that the Change Begins With Me launched by President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, 8th September, 2016, was stolen from you by our client. In one of your reckless statements published online, you stated that:

“What I didn’t realise was that I would become the next victim until Thursday, the 8th of September 2016 when I saw that the idea we dropped in the Office of the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Lai Mohammed; what seems a perfect replica of it was being launched by the minister without the consent of the real originators.

Having damaged our client’s hard earned reputation by your reckless action, we have his instruction to demand a retraction of your libelous publication within 7 days of the receipt of this letter.

The “Change Begins With Me” campaign has met with mixed feelings among the Nigerian populace. While critics demand that any change in national orientation must begin with the country’s leadership, those in support believe Nigerians should embrace the change mantra wholeheartedly.
