The Nigeria Prisons Service has confirmed that there was a jailbreak at Kuje Medium Prison in the Federal Capital Territory on Friday night.
Spokesman for the NPS, Francis Enobore, said, however, that the jail break had nothing to do with Charles Okah, the Niger Delta rights activist who is spending time in the jail house.
He said: “Reports making the rounds that Okah, the leader of the militant Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta escaped during the jailbreak is false.
“Yes there was an incident, but Okah was not involved; he is still in custody.
“I have been in touch with our men in the prison facility and there is nothing like that.’’
He said that the Controller of Prisons had ordered an investigation into the matter.
“We want to know if anybody escaped and if yes, what are their identities.
“We will release a statement once the preliminary investigation is concluded,’’ the prison’s spokesman added.
