Tomini says “the zeitgeist takes you on a journey through time, touching the 70’s to present day EKO (Lagos, Nigeria). A city characterised by its up-tempo lifestyle, vibrancy, vivacity, luminousity, and freedom, which inspires the collection…
The bird insignia is a significant illustration of ‘freedom’, depicted in the official colours of the city: red, green, yellow and blue. Illustrate Iter per tempus (lucid journey through time)”.
For a menswear designer, that’s a lot of the usual inspiration speech, no? I suppose the real question should be, did it translate in the clothes? Sort of.
For one thing, he nailed the colours: raspberry, orange, celadon, nontraditional menswear colours made to look masculine via the strict cut of the clothes. The bird insignia embroidered on the bodices of tops and jackets were fun looking, but it restricts the age demographic of the clothes to age 35, maximum. The styling, done by the Tosin Ogundadegbe of the style infidel, was superbly done. The only let down was in the tailoring. It wasn’t perfect, but for a solo effort, it is worth talking about.
