Nouva Couture has presented its Spring/Summer collection for 2017 tilted ‘Middle East Lagos’, which, as the name suggests, was heavily inspired by the Middle East.

According to the duo behind the brand, Yemisi and Bolaji Ayinde, the vision and inspiration behind the Middle East Lagos collection is the lifestyle, art and fashion of the Middle East brought to Lagos. Each dress in the collection is named after a reputable middle eastern woman, which includes the former First Lady of Nigeria, the late Mrs Maryam Babangida who was known to be a stylish, classy and conservative woman.

Save for the on-the-nose reference to the Middle East, the standouts in the collection were actually the pieces that were anti Middle East: a tweed houndstooth cape, a burgundy cape and pants set trimmed with lace, and a wedding dress with a dramatic tulle skirt and a bustier bodice with a lace overlay.

The collection also boasts of sourced luxurious fabrics such as Indian silk dotted with iridescent fresh-water pearls, Austria-imported Swarovski, and embroidered Swiss lace. The fabrication actually helped the collection because, taken away, you are left with basic clothes that aren’t new or innovative, but will no doubt sell.
