Federation Cup winners, FC Ifeanyi Ubah have emerged winners of the 2017 Charity Cup.

The Nnewi warriors defeated Nigerian League champions, Enugu Rangers 4 – 3 on penalties on Wednesday at the National Stadium Abuja.

The match ended goalless in regulation time and headed to penalties.

Four of the five spot kicks were converted by FC Ifeanyi Ubah while Rangers missed two and converted only three.

Cameroon midfielder, Tamen Medrano missed FC Ifeanyi Ubah’s only spot kick while Rangers duo of Christian Madu and Afeez Awakan missed their respective kicks.

The defeat is a wakeup call for Rangers who had earlier lost the ‘Super Four’ trophy to Rivers United.

Rangers alongside Rivers United will fly Nigeria’s flag at the 2017 CAF Champions League while FC Ifeanyi Ubah and Wikki Tourists represent Nigeria at the CAF Confederation Cup.

The Charity Cup was introduced by the Nigerian Football Federation to serve as the curtain-raiser for the new season. Just like in top European Leagues, the Charity Cup is between the League winners and Cup winners.

The Nigerian League season 2016/2017 commence this weekend with Rangers starting their defence with an eastern derby clash with Abia Warriors. FC Ifeanyi Uba travels to Kano to meet Kano Pillars while Enyimba hosts Sunshine Stars in the week’s star fixture.
