MFM FC of Lagos closed in on league leaders, Plateau United, thanks to a slim 1 – 0 win over Wikki Tourists in a week 29 Nigeria Professional Football League fixture held at the Soccer Temple, Agege Stadium on Sunday.
This season’s leading goalscorer, Stephen Odey scored the only goal of the game in the 40th minute to give the hosts the lead and take his goal tally to 17 in the current campaign.
Thanks to a 1 – 0 loss to by leaders, Plateau United, the Olukoya boys’s slim win was enough to reduce the gap at the top from five points to two. Niger Tornadoes played the spoilers on this occassion.
The hosts took an early lead courtesy of a 3rd minute penalty converted by Samuel Agba and both sides could not find the back of the net in the game held at the Confluence Stadium in Lokoja. Despite the defeat, the Tin City boys remain on top with 51 points, two points above second placed MFM FC.
FC Ifeanyi Ubah were the winners of the weekend’s Oriental Derby as they pipped rivals, Enyimba 1 – 0 in Nnewi. Godwin Obaje’s 50th minute goal proved to be the decider even as Enyimba fans claimed he was well offside before firing into the net.
It was Enyimba’s first Oriental Derby loss this season. Before Sunday, the Peoples’ elephant had won three and drew one of the Eastern Oriental Derbies they had played.
Champions, Rangers fell to a 2 – 0 defeat in the hands of Kano Pillars. Two first half goals by Jamiu Alimi and Junior Lokosa in the 32nd and 43rd minutes respectively gave Pillars the win to compound the woes of the Flying Antelopes.
In Ijebu Ode, Nasarawa United stunned hosts, Sunshine Stars as they edged past them by 1 – 0. Abdulrahman Bashir scored the only goal in the 39 minute. The Solid Miners became the 11th team to win on the road this season.
In Uyo, Akwa United walloped Gombe United 3 – 0 to move to third place. Musa Newman gave Akwa the lead in the 57th minute before Ibrahim Alhasan doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the 7oth minute. Christian Pyagbara added the third in the 83rd minute
In other results, Lobi Stars of Benue edged past hard fighting Remo Stars by 3 – 2 in a five goal thriller. Samuel Mathias’ 31st minute strike was enough for El-Kanemi warriors as they pipped Abia Warriors.
Rivers United and ABS FC settled for a goalless draw in Ilorin while Shooting Stars of Ibadan recorded a win. Wasiu Jimoh scored for Shooting Stars in the 44th minute as the Oluyole Warriors gradually climbed out of the relegation zone.
