Rangers International Football Club of Enugu renewed their title aspirations on Sunday as they crushed Rivers United 4 – 0 to return to the summit of the Nigerian Football Premier League (NPFL).
The Flying Antelopes, as Rangers are also called, went ahead in the 40th minute with a goal from star striker, Tope Olusesi.
The Imama Amakapabo’s boys sealed the victory in the second half as they scored three goals to complete the thumping of Rivers United.
The result was enough to take Rangers to the top of the NPFL table with 54 points as they look to end their 32 years drought of major silverware.
Meanwhile already relegated Ikorodu United FC of Lagos got the biggest result of Matchday 34 by getting a surprise away victory in Owerri against Heartland FC.
Relegation threatened Heartland went into the match with the hope of climbing out of the relegation zone but the Lagos-based team were too hot for them to handle as they lost 0-1 at home.
MFM FC’s woes continued on Sunday as the Lagos-based team lost 1-3 to Akwa United of Uyo. MFM is now placed 16th on the league table with 38 points and deeply in relegation zone.
After defeating Pillars by 4 – 0 in the penultimate weekend, Shooting Stars SC of Ibadan lost 0-1 to Plateau United in Jos.
Now with 41 points, 3sc now occupies 14th position on the NPFL table with just two points above the relegation zone.
In Makurdi, Enyimba’s title hopes suffered a major setback when the team lost 0 – 1 to Lobi Stars. The Aba Elephants, however, has three outstanding matches.
Earlier on Saturday, Elkanemi Warriors of Maiduguri defeated Niger Tornadoes of Minna by 2 – 0. The victory took Elkanemi to the 12th position while Niger Tornadoes slipped to 13th.
