MFM FC of Lagos missed out on a very good opportunity to close the gap on runaway leaders, Plateau United after going down 1 – 0 to Rivers United in a rescheduled NPFL Week 28 game held at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt on Wednesday.
The match was rescheduled to Wednesday because of Rivers United’s continental engagement.
A 30th minute strike from Christian Weli was enough for the Pride of Rivers to edge past the Olukoya Boys.
A long throw-in into the box found Mohammed Lukman who passed to Weli before the latter finished off calmly from close range to give Rivers United the lead.
Rivers United were reduced to 10 men in the 87th minute when defender Gabriel Olalekan was shown a second yellow card.
The win is a consolation for Rivers United who last weekend crashed out of the CAF Confederations Cup. The win has now taken them to 14th on the Log with 36 points.
Despite the defeat, MFM remain second on the league table with 46 points, five points adrift of Plateau United.
Rivers United will travel to Ilorin next weekend to face ABS FC while MFM host Wikki Tourists.
