The High Court of Osun state has sentenced the Loja of Araromi Otokobo town in Ilesa to 7 years imprisonment after being convicted of rapping 2 teenage secondary school students of St. Margaret School, Ilesa.
The 70 year old monarch was prosecuted on 2 charges of rape and indecent assault of a minor under Sections 358 and 360 of the Criminal Code respectively. The case thus lasted over 5 years and justice has been hard-won for the victims.
According to the facts of the case, the convicted monarch offered car rides to 2 girls – one, 13 years old, the other 14 – and proceeded to take them to his hotel where he brutally raped the young girls and threatened to kill them if they told anyone.
Unfortunate cases like this are not uncommon in Nigeria, especially in rural areas and particularly for young underprivileged girls and corrupt, powerful men. This is an important win, no doubt, but it is just one step in the right direction in the fight against the pervasive rape culture in the country.
