The Jigawa Police Command recorded 57 rape and sodomy cases in the first half of this year.

Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr Abdu Jinjiri, told newsmen in Dutse on Tuesday that the high number of cases of rape of under-age children in the state was worrisome.

Jinjiri said that 32 cases of rape and 25 sodomy cases were recorded in the state within the period under review.

He said that 28 of the rape suspects and 25 of the sodomy suspects had been charged to court.

A 60-year-old village head, Abubakar Ya’u, was among the five rape suspects presented to newsmen in Dutse on Tuesday.

According to the police spokesman, Ya’u who hailed from Garki Local Government Area of the state, forcibly took an eight-year-old girl to his house while on her way to school and allegedly raped her.

He said that after the investigation, all evidences showed that the village head raped the victim.

Jinjiri said that the command would continue to arrest and prosecute rape suspects to serve as deterrent to others.
