Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo on Thursday got one over his fiercest rival, Lionel Messi, as he won Marca and Gazzetta dello Sport’s award for the Best Player in the UEFA Champions League for the 2015/2016 season.
The award which is determined by votes from readers of the two Spanish sports websites was presented to Ronaldo at an event held at Madrid’s AC Hotel La Finca.
There was no doubt whether Ronaldo deserves the award after a return of 16 goals in last season’s Champions League.
Ronaldo crowned a great performance in UEFA’s apex club tournament with the winning penalty at the final in Milan when Real Madrid clashed with Athletico Madrid.
Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane and club chairman, Florentino Perez, were at the event to support their star player.
On receiving the award, Ronaldo spoke about his motivation going forward. He said: “My motivation is to keep making history at the best club in the world.”
Coupled with this award, Ronaldo won UEFA’s Best Player in Europe in August, also beating Messi.
He will be looking to crown an awesome year with his fourth Ballon d’Or win come January. This will put him one behind Messi.
