The Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, in the South–East, Monday, endorsed the party’s zoning arrangement, which zoned the office of the President to the North, noting that it will support a candidate of northern extraction for the presidency in the 2019 general elections.
The decision was disclosed by the Zonal Chairman of the party, Mr. Austin Umahi while reading a communiqué at the end of the PDP South-East Zonal Executive Committee meeting in Enugu.
Umahi reiterated its commitment to national unity and also reaffirmed the party’s earlier agreement on the zoning of party positions allotted to the South-East in respect of the forthcoming elective national convention.
He also said that the zone equally backed the zoning of the office of the party’s national chairman to the South. The PDP governors and National Assembly members from the zone were mandated to liaise with the other geopolitical zones in the country to reach an understanding towards the emergence of the party’s next national chairman.
“We are committed to the PDP zoning arrangement of president to the North and national party chairman to the South of Nigeria. We mandate our governors, zonal chairman and national assembly leaders to liaise with other zones to reach an understanding in respect of the next national chairman of our party,” he said.
The Zonal Chairman also disclosed that the zonal leadership of the party would support its governorship candidate in Anambra State, Mr. Oseloka Obaze, and his running mate, Mrs. Chidi Onyemelukwe, in the November gubernatorial election in the state.
Those who attended the meeting were a former Vice President, Chief Alex Ekwueme, the governors of Abia and Enugu states while Ebonyi governor was represented by his deputy.
Others were Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Col. Austin Akobundu (rtd.), Chief Emeka Ihedioha and the Legal Adviser of the party in Abia, Chief Ukpai Ukairo.
