The Social Media Bill which showed up on the floor of the Senate earlier this year has been disposed off by the Senate.
Much after criticism and ruckus caused by Nigerians and human rights groups, the Senate did away with the petition bill as it was judged earlier on, a prevention of free speech.
The Senate reportedly made this final decision after its committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters recommended that the bill be withdrawn.
Culling from the report of the committee’s presence at plenary, the chairman, Senate Committee on Judiciary, Senator David Umaru stated that the committee observed after a public hearing that the penal code and the Cyber Crime Act still have sufficient provisions to address the issues the recommended law aim to address.
