Senator Nenandi Usman has reportedly returned N23m to the Federal Government with a promise to turn in more funds. Usman has been a former Minister of Finance and the Director of Finance in Goodluck Jonathan’s Campaign Organization.
She was arrested on Thursday by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for receiving N2.5bn worth of taxpayers money – which was shared to some party chieftains during the last general elections.
Punch Newspaper reported that it was revealed that she has been cooperating and has since returned the stated amount. It was also revealed in a quote by Usman that she only followed the directive of the former President. She further told investigators that she was asked to set up a bank account during the build-up to the election.
She claimed that all donations were made to Jonathan’s campaign through the said account – Joint Trust Dimensions Nigeria Limited while including that it was through this account funds were released to all Campaign Directors, Zonal Coordinators and other parties, groups as well as individuals who campaigned for the PDP. She further stated that she wasn’t aware that the funds belonged to the Federal Government.
There are indications that the Director of Publicity, Femi Fani-Kayode, was paid N840m through this account while the Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, Olu Falae, and former Oyo State Governor, Rashidi Ladoja, were alleged to have received N100m each, through the same account, as well as others alleged to have received funds from Usman.
However, she questioned why she didn’t check back with the Government as at then, and why she set up an account bearing a PDP ownership. Suspicions were raised as to why she also used her company’s name for the account.
