You could feel the worry all around Camp Nou through your screen when Barcelona talisman, Lionel Messi, walked off the pitch with a groin problem in the 58th minute of the match against Athletico Madrid last Wednesday.
Fans were worried about how Barca would perform without their biggest star, little did they know that their next match, wherein he didn’t feature will be a comfortable landslide victory away from home. The Athletico Madrid match he featured in ended in a draw.
If they had known their team so well, they would have worried little.
The Blaugrana looked a different side without Messi on Saturday when they ran out 5-nil winners at Sporting Gijon. Neymar’s brace within seven minutes and Suarez, Turan and Rafinha’s lone goals were enough to secure victory to the delight of the visiting fans.
With Messi set to sit out the next three weeks for both club and country, we thought it nice to ease the worries of Barca fans with statistics obtained from Opta that clearly shows Barca is actually better without Messi.
Below are the stats:
|UCL Matches 98||34 UCL Matches|
|Wins 60||22 Wins|
|Draws 23||8 Draws|
|Losses 15||4 Losses|
|Win Percentages 61.2%||64.7% Win Percentages|
|Goals Scored 215||61 Goals Scored|
|Goals Per Game 2.2||1.8 Goals Per Game|
Messi won’t be playing in Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Borussia Monchengladbach. As the stats show Barca without Messi are more than capable of handling themselves against their German foe.
