Barcelona and Real Madrid, both by far the biggest teams in the Spanish La Liga and arguably the whole world have a long history of rivalry that involves chasing after each other in every way possible.
With the 2016/2017 season yet to start in Spain, the two teams have already rekindled their rivalry though not in a football match.
Madrid became the first of the two teams to win a trophy this new campaign when they defeated Sevilla 3 – 1 in the UEFA Super Cup last Tuesday, August 9 in Norway.
Since Madrid stands a good chance to win another trophy in December when they feature as European Champions at the Club World Cup, Barcelona were not ready to let their rival have a long laugh over them as they also ensured they won their first trophy of the campaign on Wednesday when they defeated Sevilla 5 – 0 on aggregate in the Spanish Supercopa.
Barca won the first of the two-leg tie in Seville by 2 – 0 and capped it with a fine display on Wednesday as they won 3 – 0 in Camp Nou.
With the win Barca became the team that has lifted the Supercopa the most at 13 times. And they have Arda Turan’s brace and Messi’s looping header to thank for it.
Barca and Madrid will now look forward to the weekend when the La Liga kicks off. Barca will host Real Betis on Saturday while Madrid will be hosted by Real Sociedad.
