Two factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo held two separate state congresses on Monday in Owerri.
The faction led by Sen. Hope Uzodinma (Imo West Senatorial District) held its congress at the PDP Secretariat, Okigwe Road, Owerri,
The other faction led by a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and former Gov. Achike Udenwa held its own at the Kanu Nwankwo indoor Events Centre, Owerri.
Armed soldiers, police team and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were stationed at the PDP secretariat.
Similarly, armed police mobile force were on hand to forestall possible break down of law and order at Kanu Nwankwo Events Centre,
There was heavy vehicular movement on Chukwuma Nwoha road to Imo State University campus, close to Kanu Nwankwo Events Centre because of the number of people attending the congress at that venue.
At the PDP secretariat, the Uzodinma group hung banner of Sen. Ali-Modu Sheriff on the party’s office, with reasonable number of its supporters present.
Mr Austine Opara, Chairman of Congress Committee for the Ihedioha group, told delegates to be orderly and peaceful.
Opara, a former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, said to build a united and indivisible PDP family ahead of 2019 general elections, every supporter must close rank.
“Imo is PDP and we cannot afford to lose the state again in 2019 and we can only achieve this fate by working together as a single team,’’ he said.
He told those in attendance that a candidate must emerge at the end of the contest, noting that whoever won should be supported.
Chief Jimi Agbaje, the Lagos State governorship candidate of the party in the 2015 general election warned against acts and conducts capable of causing problem.
Agbaje used the opportunity to solicit for the support of the delegates in his ambition to be the national chairman of the party.
The Uzodimma group announced former state chairman of the party, Chief Nnamdi Anyaehie as its chairman while the other faction was yet to announce its elected principal officers as the congress was still in progress as at the time of filing this report.
