Chelsea’s 1 – 1 draw against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night ensured they qualified for the second round of the Uefa Champions League as second behind Roma who defeated Qarabag 1 – 0.
This draw has left Antonio Conte’s side with the prospect of facing one of Europe’s elite in the round of 16.
As Chelsea cannot be drawn against another Premier League side, it means Barcelona, PSG and Besiktas are possible opponents.
Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham have already won their groups, while Liverpool are likely to tonight.
However, while Chelsea have made life harder for themselves after missing some golden chances to beat Atletico, Conte is ready for what could lie ahead.
“When you go through to the next round in this competition, you must be prepared to face the best teams,” Conte said.
“We could play against Barcelona, PSG or Besiktas, but we must be ready. This is the best tournament.
“That’s why you want to go through and try and be a protagonist in this tournament. At the same time, our opponents won’t be happy to play against us.
“We’ll see what happens. I remember during the European Championship with the national team we finished first in our group and played against Spain, then Germany and, if we’d beaten Germany, we’d have to play France.
“Sometimes it’s not so important (to finish first). We reached the next round and we must be happy with this. After a performance like this, the coach must be (happy).”
Chelsea will discover their opponents for the next round on Monday when the draw is done in Switzerland at 12 p.m.
