To win 3 – 1 in the first leg sets up the return match nicely, but that hasn’t always been synonymous with progressing to the next round for Real Madrid.
On eight occasions, after winning the first leg at home, Los Blancos have failed to advance four times, a rate of only 50 per cent.
Four of those eight matches came in the Champions League, and only once did the club fail to reach the next round, back in 1978/79 against Grasshopper.
It is in the UEFA Cup that Real have had worse luck after a dominant first leg 3 – 1 performance at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, as PSV, PSG, and Kaiserslautern have all dumped them out of the competition.
The other time a similar scoreline happened was the 1982/83 Cup Winners’ cup, a two-goal deficit which Ujpesti Dozsa were not able to overcome.
