The UN is marking the International Day of Cooperatives on Saturday

The United Nations General Assembly in 1992 proclaimed the first Saturday in July of every year as the International Day of Cooperatives to be celebrated annually.

The theme for this year’s celebration is: “Co-operatives: The power to act for a sustainable future.’’

The aim of the International Day, according to the UN, is to increase awareness on cooperatives and highlight the complementarity of the goals and objectives of the United Nations and the international cooperative movements.

It is also to underscore the contribution of the movements to the resolution of the major problems addressed by the United Nations.

The global institution stated that the Day was also proclaimed to strengthen and extend partnerships between the international cooperative movements and other actors, including governments at local, national and international levels.

It said co-operatives had a unique role to play in implementing and achieving developmental goals because their business model has sustainable development at its core, being based on ethical values and principles.
